Passwords are the weakest link in digital security. They are easily guessed, stolen in phishing scams, or leaked in database breaches. FIDO2 and the Web Authentication (WebAuthn) API are changing the landscape, paving the way for a completely passwordless, cryptographically secure web.

How WebAuthn Works Behind the Scenes

WebAuthn replaces passwords with asymmetric cryptography. When you register on a WebAuthn-enabled site, your device (a phone, laptop, or hardware key) generates a unique public-private key pair. The site stores the public key, while the private key remains secure inside your device's hardware enclave (like Apple's Secure Enclave or an Android Keystore).

Unlocking with Biometrics

To log in, the site sends a cryptographic challenge to your device. You authorize the login locally using Touch ID, Face ID, or a PIN. Your device signs the challenge with the private key and returns it. Since the private key never leaves your physical device and biometrics are processed entirely offline, WebAuthn completely neutralizes phishing, credential leaks, and middleman attacks.
