Sharing your real phone number online is a major security risk. Unlike email, your mobile number is tied directly to your physical identity, your bank accounts, and your physical location. It is also the primary target for SIM-swapping scams and automated robocalls.

The Threat of SIM-Swapping

In a SIM-swapping attack, a hacker contacts your cellular provider, pretends to be you, and convinces them to activate your number on a new SIM card. Once they control your phone number, they can bypass SMS-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log into your email, social media, and banking portals.

Using Virtual SIMs and VoIP Services

To shield your phone number, use virtual numbers for all non-essential accounts:

  • VoIP Providers: Services like Google Voice, Skype, or MySudo let you create dedicated virtual phone numbers that forward calls and messages to your device.
  • Temporary SMS Portals: For one-off registrations, use online temporary SMS services to receive activation codes without sharing any personal details.
  • Hardware Verification: Whenever possible, configure your bank and social accounts to use authenticator apps instead of SMS codes, keeping your communications secure from network hacking.
