Many web servers require a local mail transfer agent (MTA) solely to send application alerts, cron logs, or system reports. You do not need a full mail server that listens for inbound requests. Setting up Postfix as a send-only SMTP server is the most secure and lightweight setup.

postfix Installation and Hardening

Install Postfix on your Debian/Ubuntu server. Open /etc/postfix/main.cf and modify the inet_interfaces parameter to only listen locally:

inet_interfaces = loopback-only
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 [::1]/128

Testing Outbound Mail

This simple configuration ensures that Postfix only accepts outgoing mail from your local web application and refuses any external SMTP requests from the internet, protecting your server from being abused by spammers as an open relay, keeping your system lightweight and secure.
