Cloud applications rely on dozens of API keys to connect to payment gateways, database clusters, and email routing engines. If a hacker intercepts a single API key, they can run costly servers, access user databases, or shut down your platform entirely.

1. Never Hardcode Keys in Codebases

Hardcoding keys directly in your JavaScript or PHP files is the most common cause of security breaches. If you push the repository to GitHub, scanner bots will extract the key within seconds. Use environment variables (stored in .env files excluded from Git tracking) to load keys dynamically at runtime.

2. Implement Secret Managers

For production deployments, offload keys to managed secret vaults (like AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault, or Google Cloud Secret Manager). These vaults encrypt keys, provide granular access control lists, and support automated key rotation, ensuring your secrets are always secure.
